Brain Injury Australia needs your help!

As part of its annual funding agreement with the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA) Brain Injury Australia produces a policy paper for the Australian Government on an agreed topic. 2011-2012's paper, will look at sports-related concussion and "mild" traumatic brain injury. While 2011-2012's paper will cover a variety of sports, it will concentrate on how Rugby League, Rugby Union and Australian Rules football assess, manage and prevent concussion. And while the paper will spend some time examining the professional competitions of the three football codes, it will also concentrate on amateur, including junior/ children's, play. Brain Injury Australia would greatly appreciate any contribution you could make to the paper's contents, including the following areas:

  • Do you think that the recent attention being given to concussion by sports officials and the media is justified? If so, why? If not, why not?
  • Have you experienced concussion from playing Rugby League, Rugby Union or Australian Rules football?
  • Are you a carer or parent of someone who experienced concussion from playing Rugby League, Rugby Union or Australian Rules football?
  • How was the concussion assessed and managed by playing staff?
  • How was it determined when you/ your child could return to training, return to competitive play?
  • Are you aware of any concussion prevention strategies, coaching techniques etc.?
  • Do you know of any Rugby League, Rugby Union or Australian Rules football clubs who have done their own monitoring of concussion - the number of instances, the effects on players, recovery time etc.?
  • Do you know of any former Rugby League, Rugby Union or Australian Rules football players living with the consequences of concussion?

The policy paper is to be delivered to the Australian Government 29 June, 2012. Brain Injury Australia would appreciate hearing from you...as soon as possible, and by May 11 at the latest.
